Imphal, May 26 2013:
57-year-old entrepreneur Ningthoujam Kumar Mangang of Thangmeiband College Gate has excelled in the production of vermi compost and mushroom without availing any financial assistance from the Government.
Kumar runs a vermi compost cum mushroom plantation farm under the name of "Natural Resource Development Foundation" at Nongdam Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district.
The farm was set up on January 10, 2012 by importing 80,000 vermis from France costing one rupee each.
The imported vermi is named "Esina Foetida" and it is helpful in mass production of vermi compost.
Vermi compost is usually composed of 75 percent vegetable wastes and 25 percent cow dung.
Vermies are added to the mixture after decomposition.
It is widely marketed as a organic manure and it is in high demand now.
A vermi compost farm was set up by State Agriculture Department earlier in 2004, but now it has become defunct.
Kumar told Hueiyen Lanpao that the farm could now produce tonnes of vermi compost which is in high demand for organic cultivation of vegetables and fruits.
Besides vermi compost, the farm also produces mushroom.
He said that he can earn a regular income from his farm and now able to maintain his family easily.
However, he lamented that no government agency has rendered any assistance to him while setting up the farm.
