Lifting liquor ban anti-people: JD-U

The Janata Dal (United) has expressed dissatisfaction over the government of Manipur's decision to lift ban on sale and consumption of liquor in Manipur, which has been a dry state since 1991, and termed move as anti-people.
In a release, JD (U), Manipur president Ksh Biren Singh said that prohibition had to be imposed in the state as thousands of families were ruined due to excessive consumption of liquor.
Domestic violence causing mental and physical traumas to the wives of habitual drinkers was a common sight in many families.
In order to prevent the social and economic menace, women/ Imas of Manipur came together and formed "Nisha Bandh" across the state, he pointed out, adding that, they came out on the roads and lanes, day and night, to stop any male folks from drinking and selling of alcohol.
After seeing the mass agitation of Imas and appreciating the public sentiment against liquor/alcohol, the then coalition government of Manipur People's Party and Janata Dal imposed prohibition in 1991, he pointed out.
He said that decision of the State Cabinet to lift prohibition in Manipur is anti-people.
Considering the imminent serious socio-economic impact of drinking on families, especially those belonging to poor families, due to lifting of the prohibition by the BJP government in Manipur, Janata Dal (United), Manipur opposes decision to lift the prohibition, he maintained.
While demanding the BJP government to review their decision to lift prohibition, he urged the government to take stringent measures to strictly implement prohibition law in the state.
