Awareness programme on Child Rights held

A one day awareness programme for Thoubal district on 'Child Rights, with a focus on Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 & POCSO Act, 2012' was held at Umang Laikon, Heirok, by the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) as part of the ongoing District Level Child Rights Awareness Programme under the sponsorship of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) .
Speaking at the event, Education and Labour Minister Th Radheshyam stressed on the alarming rise of assault and harassment against women and children in the State as well as the country.
He stated that the public should be more vigilant and aware of these cases and such awareness programme can help the people combat such assault or harassment.
Th Radheshyam further said that knowledge and information through awareness programmes, workshops etc should imparted in such a way that the public can easily understand the steps and procedures required while tackling assaults and other cases.
The programme conducted by MPCR, he explained, is to highlight and make the people understand how to protect children and their rights, under Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and POCSO Act, 2012.Regarding complaints made by victims or their families to a police station, he said that the officials concerned should give maximum cooperation to such cases.
While handling juvenile cases, Radhesyam said, police should make sure that they treat the children with care.
"No children want to become rogue but it is under certain circumstances that they were sometime compelled to choose the wrong path", the Minister asserted.
India is a welfare State and it is mandatory to fulfil the basic requirements of the people, he added.
He asserted that it is under such compulsion and necessity that the Government has implemented a free and compulsory education to children between the 6-14 years, in the country.
It is the duty of the people that to look after the children who fails to get education owing to poverty, he added.
Radheshyam said that it is utmost important that the Government schemes, implemented in the interest of the people, reach the targeted beneficiaries without fail.
The programme was also attended by Chairperson, MCPCR, Sumatibala Ningthoujam, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad, Thoubal, Hashina Begum, Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal Haobam Roshita Devi, Acting Session Judge Bini Ngangom, Hijam Priyokumar along with resource persons, teachers, students and locals.
