Works minister assures IT road spruce up

Works minister Govindas Konthoujam inspected the condition of the Imphal-Tamei (IT) Road, which has been approved in-principle for upgrade to a national highway by the ministry of road transport and highways.
Commerce and industries minister Nemcha Kipgen, water resources minister Awangbow Newmai, MLA N Kayisii, PWD chief engineer Kh Temba and other department officials accompanied the minister during his visit on Saturday.
The team covered Thongla Atongba road, landslide affected road stretch near T Waichong and damaged river banks in Maku area as well as PHC in T Waichong.
Interacting with the media during the visit, Govin das said that the ministry had approved in principle to upgrade the 120 km long Kangpokpi to Tamei road to status of a national highway in June 2018.Consequently, chief minister N Biren urged Prime Minister to assign NH number for the road.
He had also talked to union minister Nitin Gadkari in this regard, Govindas said, and expressed confidence that people of the area will have a better experience once the road is upgraded to a national highway.
The state government will no longer have to worry about fund for improving the road, he said and informed that the government will soon begin renovation work for a stretch of 35 km with assistance from Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF).
The project will begin once the monsoonseason ends, Govindas maintained.
Meanwhile, minister Nemcha Kipgen said that the government acknowledges the importance of better road infrastructure to improve the quality of life and expressed confidence that the people of the area will soon get better road connectivity.
According to minister Awangbow Newmai, the road is an important lifeline for the people of Tamei, Tadubi and Kangpokpi assembly constituencies.
Earlier, the road was in good condition when NEC was handling the project but people of the area have been facing inconveniences in the last five years as the condition of the road deteriorated, he said and assured that MLAs of the three assembly constituencies will galvanise own resources to maintain the road until the road renovation work begins.
