Imphal, April 21 2015 :
Nambol market, one of the oldest markets of the State located in Bishnupur district and quite close to Imphal West district is all set to be reconstructed anew.
Briefing media persons this afternoon at the office of Nambol Municipal Council, Nambol A/C MLA N Loken informed that there is a plan to construct Nambol market anew.
The existing market sheds were constructed under IDSMT scheme between 1990 and 1995 and they were inaugurated in 1996/1997.But now they have become outdated.
At that time, the Government of India sanctioned re-construction of Thoubal market and Nambol market simultaneously under IDSMT but the then MLA elected from Nambol A/C combined the two projects and constructed only the Nambol market sheds.
On account of technical flaws, the market sheds are inundated during rainy season and their different portions have started breaking apart due to lack of quality control.
The place where the Nambol market was constructed is a low lying area.
That is why it gets flooded during rainy season, Loken said.
Moreover, Bamon Loukol Khong (canal) which used to drain out excess water from Nambol area has been completely blocked.
Nonetheless, the road along the bank of Nambol river has been black-topped and people have been enjoying the benefits of this change.
Taking serious note of the chronic problem of water scarcity during dry seasons, big community ponds numbering two to three have been dug in almost all the 28 villages of Nambol with the exception of two or three villages.
As such, these villages were spared from the problem of water scarcity this dry season, Loken claimed.
The MLA also conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for generously providing Rs 100 crore for setting up a National Sports University in Manipur.
