Imphal, February 20 2019:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has warned that it might launch various forms of agitation, if the Board Of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) fails to ensure that the prescribed textbooks for elementary school level upto the High School level are made available in the markets within the next 10 days.
Speaking to media persons at AMSU Headquarters at DM College complex today, its president Manjit Sarangthem accused the Education Department and BOSEM of not paying serious attention to non-availability of school textbooks.
Further pointing out that non availability of textbooks prescribed by BOSEM, especially during the time of commencement of academic sessions, has been a recurring issue in the State, Manjit asked why the Education Department and BOSEM have not made any preparation to ensure the availability of the textbooks in time and keep on making the same mistake every year.
In the first week of December, AMSU even appealed the authorities concerned to make necessary preparations in advance to ensure that the BOSEM prescribed textbooks are available in the market.
However, even after most of the Government schools have commenced sessions for around a month and the majority of the private schools have conducted around 15 to 20 days of its academic session, the issue of non availability of school textbooks remains unchanged.
This is most unfortunate and is a big failure of the Education Department.
There is no meaning of paying inspection visit to schools by the Education Minister or conducting the "Go to School" Mission by the State Government if the Education Department and BOSEM cannot even ensure timely availability of school textbooks, Manjit said, noting that such mistakes in the education system have made the people dependent on other States for proper education even today.
Informing that many of the private schools and missionary schools in the State prescribe textbooks of their choice, Manjit lamented that the Education Department cannot even properly enforce the norm of making every school under BOSEM follow a common syllabus.
He then questioned the role and responsibility taken by the Education Minister in the education sector in the State while asserting that AMSU might launch different forms of agitation, including throwing rotten tomatoes and spoiled eggs at the Government offices related to the Education Department if the said Department as well as BOSEM fail to make the prescribed textbooks available in the market within the next 10 days.
The AMSU president further appealed every parents and guardians in the State to raise a strong voice against the lapses of the Education Department.
