Policing to get a major overhaul in Manipur

In view of rising crime rate in the State, the Home Department, Government of Manipur is all set for a major overhauling of the entire policing system for giving a firmer hand in dealing with crimes.
In this regard, a meeting for discussing the issues faced by Manipur Police Department was convened by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gaikhangam at Ist MR Banquet Hall today.
DGP MK Das, MD/MPHC Shahid Ahmad, Principal Secretary (Home) Dr Suresh Babu and all top ranking police officers of and above the rank of SP/CO attended the first ever meeting held at the Ministerial head of Home Department, according to a statement issued issued by DGP MK Das himself.
During the interactive meeting, filling up of vacancies in supervisory ranks was highlighted as very important for effective functioning of the Police Department.
Upgradation of infrastructural; buildings including proper accommodation was deliberated upon.

A new PHQ building is earmarked to come up at Mantripukhri for which Rs 40 crores has been proposed under 14th Finance Commission.
Proper distribution of vehicles among the units and provisions of funds for vehicle maintenance was emphasised by many officers for efficient mobility in far flung areas for better and co-ordinated policing.
Upgradation of traffic management under a higher ranked officer, refresher and in-service courses for skill upgradation of the police officers and all other ranks and their welfare measures were among the many issues discussed during the meeting, the statement said.
According to the statement, the Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister expressed that holding such kind of meeting was his long felt desire after holding the charge of the department and said that it should be held at least two times in a year.
He stressed the need for proper manpower deployment and important role of supervisory officers in conducting frequent inspection of their deployed personnel.
He also said that the police department should start afresh to become a modern, efficient and people friendly police.
