Abducted driver, handyman freed

After 20 days in captivity, a driver and a handyman who were reportedly abducted by suspected cadres of NSCN (K) at gun point for a ransom amount of 6 lakhs from Piphema, Nagaland on July 25 last returned to their respective homes safely today.
The abducted driver identified as Langoljam Radhamohan, (30), s/o L.Khelen of Lamding Cherapur and handyman Khumanthem Sanjit, (22), s/o Kh.
Binoy of Wangoo Nongyaikhong were released near Kohima, Super Market at around 8:30 pm yesterday after which they safely reached home today.
They were reportedly abducted by armed cadres of NSCN (K) at Piphema, Nagaland while they were coming towards Imphal from Guwahati driving a cement loaded truck bearing registration number MN01-9062 .
After their safe arrival in Imphal today, the two were warmly welcomed by their family members and All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union at the union's office located at M..GAvenue, Imphal.
Talking to media persons, H.Khulamani, general secretary of the transporters' union cited that the abduction of the driver and the handyman by the rebel group is not the first instance and that earlier even more ugly incidents like burning of vehicles and kidnapping and killing of drivers for ransom had been committed miscreants.
He further mentioned that about 40-50 vehicles were burnt along the highway by miscreants in the period between 2010 and 2013 .
In the light of all these mishaps and unfortunate incidents which occurred along the national highways, he urged the concerned authorities to speed up the construction works of the Imphal-Jiri highway.
He also appealed to the government to provide proper security to the transporters and drivers so that their lives are protected and saved from the harassment of the underground groups.
Khulamani also appealed to the drivers to ply along Imphal-Jiri road instead of taking the Imphal-Dimapur road for transportation as there is greater risk of facing obstacles along the latter route.
