Imphal, June 13 2021:
Manipur People's Party (MPCC) vice-president Dr S Ibomcha has urged the government to develop Lamphelpat as a spot of urban tourism.
In a statement, Dr Ibomcha said that developing Lamphelpat as an urban tourist site will not only bring new life to Imphal city and its surrounding area but will help develop economy of the people settling in and around the water body.
Uripok assembly constituency is in the heart of Imphal city but the area perennially faces flooding during rainy season due to construction of various structures in Lamphelpat area, thereby destroying the natural ecosystem and drainage system.
During the Congress rule, 100-acre land area was reserved for developing a water body in Lamphelpat but the project did not materialised.
The BJP government also made a similar announcement but no initiatives have been taken up so far.
At the same time, the 100-acre area is too small to develop a water body as urban tourism spot, he said while urging the government to reclaim the water body's original geographical areas by leaving only RIMS and Central Agricultural University.
It will not only attract tourists and improve socio-economic condition of the people but the project will also address the issue of flash floods in Imphal city during rainy season to a great extent.
In case MPP returns to power, the party will not hesitate to take up the project by according top priority, he added in his statement.
