Imphal, January 10 2020:
Soibam Subhaschandra, MLA of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly Constituency, has opined that the true meaning of independence will be experienced only after Manipur becomes non-dependant on other States for food items.
He made the statement during a one day farmers' training programme which was organised at Lairenjam Makha Leikai community hall today, by District Agriculture Officer Imphal West and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Loumi Lup, under the National Food Security Mission-Pulses.
Speaking as the chief guest of the event, the MLA said that in the case of Manipur, most of the food items, including vegetables, are imported from other States which leads to money being drained outside the State.
In the past, farmers used to save seeds from a harvest for use during the next planting season but now this practice seems to be declining, he opined.
During the event, the MLA distributed seeds and saplings to the farmers.
District Agriculture Officer, Imphal West, K Kulabidhu and Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer, Wangoi, N Maniyaima were also present as well.
Before the said programme, the MLA distributed weaving machines and other items to 150 selected weavers of the Constituency, under the National Handloom Development Programme, during an event which was jointly organised by the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Weavers Service Centre, Imphal and Handloom & Textiles Directorate.
