Imphal, October 09 2020:
Police today cracked down on a group of people who protested against any attempt to incorporate the site of National Sports University (NSU) in Kangpokpi district, and they also succeeded in driving away the protesters.
Villages of Kangchup, Koutruk and Phayeng gathered at Koutruk and staged a sit-in-protest there this afternoon before taking out a protest rally towards the NSU site.
As they approached the NSU site, they were blocked and driven back by police who fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
In the course of the rally, the protesters shouted in unison that NSU site is not related with Kangpokpi district and it should not be incorporated within Kangpokpi district.
One of the protesters said that the NSU site is within Imphal West district and this fact is well corroborated by Government records.
People of Senjam Chirang, Senjam Khunou and Koutruk enthusiastically welcomed the Government's decision to set up NSU at the site where it stands and they even donated necessary land without asking for a single penny, he said.
The authority's claim or attempt to take the NSU within Kangpokpi district will never be accepted, he added.
