Kangpokpi, June 09 2018:
The 127th Martyr's Day of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, the first Indian Gorkha to attained martyrdom while fighting against the mighty Britishers in India, was widely observed yesterday at Kanglatongbi.
Organized by the All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU), Meena Bista, Pradhan, Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat, Shiva Kumar Basnet, former Pradhan, Kanglatongbi GP, LB Adhikari, president, AMGSU attended the event as presidium members.
AMGSU president, LB Adhikari said that Niranjan Singh Chhetri was a Subedar in Native force of Yuvraj Tikendrajit in Manipur while adding that he was trailed by the Chief Political Officer, commanding Manipur Field Force of the then British Government of India and he was sentenced to be hanged for assisting Tikendrajit's native force on June 8, 1891 at the Western Gate of Kangla in the State capital.
Adhikari, however, said that despite the supreme sacrifice made 127 years ago, the Govt of India as well as the Govt of Manipur is yet to recognize and honour the Subedar even after 71 years of free India.
Subedar Niranjan Chhetri made the supreme sacrifice not only for the Gorkha community but for the entire people of the country and the denizens of Manipur, he said.
Recalling the assurance made by the previous Govt to the Gorkha community of the State to erect a statue of the Subedar as a mark of honour and tribute, the AMGSU urged the present BJP led coalition Govt to fulfil the assurance by erecting a statue of the Subedar at any 'convenient' place.
