MCPCR recommends fixing number of students in school vans

Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has made several recommendations with regard to transportation of school children including fixing the number of students that should be accommodated in a school van or bus.
The recommendations were made by the Commission today after hearing a suo-moto case taken up in connection with the incident of school children fainted inside a school van of North Eastern English School, Khewa Bazar few days back.
The recommendations of the Commission included setting up of a committee comprising school management, transporters and parents to frame rules for the safety of children in school vans and buses; checking of school vans and buses which can be put off the road as per Motor Vehicles Act; introduction of Permit System for school transporters by Transport Department; single service by the school transporters in a working day; maintaining same colours for all school vans and buses with provision for proper windows and ventilators; checking emission level of carbon monoxide gas in school vans and buses by Manipur Pollution Control Board.
The Commission also recommended that no children should be seated with the driver and the transport fare should be charged only for the working days.
It further recommended the school transporters to have an agreement with the School Management Committee for safety of children and to protect the rights of the Children.
The Commission chaired by A Nabachandra heard the testimonies of 9 persons including the van driver, Principal of North Eastern School and doctors of JNIMS on May 25 .
