Imphal, January 04 2013 :
Though Sajiwa Jail admits around 1800 inmates in a year, with 700 inmates staying to-gether at any point of time the medical budget for the jail, alio cated by the Finance Department, is only Rs 4 lakhs per annum.
Though medical facilities are to be extended to prisoners as per the norms laid down by the Government, the budget of only Rs 4 lakhs is inadequate to meet the medical needs of the inmates, said the Jail SP IK Muivah.
Under the circumstances, the poorest prisoners, without family support, are routinely identified on humanitarian grounds.
Other prisoners are advised to bear their own expenses, said the SP and added that at the moment there is an outstanding medical bill of Rs 6 lakhs to medical suppliers.
The SP Jails and other officers have to at times spend money from their own pocket to avoid any unfortunate eventualities.
Though the Finance Department has been requested many times to revise the budget allocation for medicines, it has not been complied with.
