IFCD rules out dam burst

Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD), Manipur on Monday asserted that there is no possibility of bursting the Mapithel dam.
On Monday a team of media persons visited in the construction site of the dam and met the senior officials in charge of the dam.
Speaking to the media persons Superintending Engineering Ksh Premjit assured that there is no possibility for bursting the dam.
He further said that everything is done to ensure that there is no tragedy.
He appealed to the people not to panic.
Premjit said that the department has planned to finish the construction works by next March and about 96 percent of construction is over.
The department has taken many preventive measures to decrease the water pressures, the dam water volume by using water pumps, he said one cm per hour of water volume has been decreased.
About 20 kmz of water volume has been dragged out by pumping and also diverted in other canals to reduce the water volume.
Meanwhile cement bags and pipes are used in the water leakage area of the dam while bamboos are also used to plug the leakage.
Meanwhile, amid of the reported leakages of the Mapithel dam, residents of the villages located in the immediate downstream area of the dam continue to take shelter outside their villages fearing an outburst of the water and flooding their villages over ten days.
The residences of Itham, Moirangpurel and Tumakhok villages had evacuated their villages on fearing the worst due to the reported leakages since July 23 and have been spending the night on trucks, waiting sheds and makeshift shelters.
Andro MLA also appealed that all the educational institutions in the Andro AC will be open from Tuesday.
The institutions were closed on feared of dam breakdown and weather.
