Imphal, November 01 2014 :
All Manipur Elementary School Teachers' Association (AMESTA) has threatened to cease their work of teaching students in elementary schools if the government does not take a firm stand on regularization of Requisite Qualification Scale/Higher Scale for 1611 elementary teachers within a week.
Announcing this in a press meet at its office located at Khoyathong, Ch Shantakumar, general secretary of AMESTA reiterated that elementary teachers have been launching different forms of agitations demanding regularization of Requisite Qualification Scale/Higher Scale since October 13 last which is the long pending demand but no positive response has been given by the government till date.
As part of the protest, teachers in Churachandpur had launched rally and hunger strike for 12 days consecutively which ended yesterday.
The decision to cease teaching of students was taken by executive committee of AMESTA following the government's failure to meet the demand despite repeated requests made, he maintained.
Strongly condemning the decision of the government not to give leave salary, pension and gratuity for retired teachers until an order; he demanded resignation of Chief Minister and Education Minister on moral grounds.
Above all, the decision to give pension in matriculate scale to those graduate teachers who will be retiring is also highly condemnable, he added.
Cautioning that all the elementary teachers are also set to launch fast unto death stir if the government fails to give positive response to the demand within seven days time, he alleged that the Education Department is the most problematic department.
A Keilani, vice-president of AMESTA who was also present during the meet said that failure of the government to meet the long pending demand amounts to deprivation of the teachers and questioned the government's attitude towards the grievances of the elementary teachers.
