The 39-year-old man from Silchar who was convicted of committing penetrative sexual assault on a minor by the Special Court (POCSO) Ukhrul recently has been awarded 16 years rigorous imprisonment.
The POCSO Court had convicted him on January 20 .
The convict is said to be the uncle of the minor (12) .
He had brought, her to Ukhrul in October 2015 in the name of providing her education.
As per the submission of the Investigating Officer in the Court, she was admitted in a school at Ukhrul.
Since March 2016 till the day she filed a police complaint on May 20 the same year, she was subjected to sexual assault by the convict.
The accused had committed penetrative sexual assault on the minor victim girl repeatedly attracting offence under Section 3 of the POCSO Act, 2012 .
Hence he is punishable under Section 4 of the same Act, the Court had said convicting the accused.
The Court today awarded the convict 16 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 .
Further, the Court also directed the State Government to adequately compensate the victim and her family members under the Victim Compensation Scheme through the District Legal Services Authority Ukhrul.
