Imphal, April 25 2020:
A high-level meeting presided by Chief Minister N Biren this morning discussed about increasing the State's paddy production this year.
The meeting which was attended by Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian, CAF&PD Minister Karam Shyam, top officials of Agriculture, Horticulture, IFCD, Water Resources and Minor Irrigation Departments also studied the feasibility of double cropping of paddy.
The meeting assumed significance as much higher quantity of rice than the State's NFSA quota has been distributed to public on account of the lockdown compelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As water is a prerequisite for paddy cultivation, the meeting discussed about how water can be diverted to paddy fields where double cropping would be done, informed a source.
The meeting further discussed about what alternative crop can be cultivated where double cropping of paddy is not feasible.
It is reported that the Agriculture Commissioner would preside another meeting on the same matter on Monday which would be attended by officials of CAU and ICAR.
