Comprehensive policy needed for sustainable production: Parijat

Dependence on imported food is not good, said Agriculture minister Ph Parijat who stressed on the need of a comprehensive policy for the state to produce self sustainable food on its own.
He asserted that the state does not produce food to be self sufficient and is heavily dependent on food items imported from outside the state.
The effort should be to attain self-sustenance.
"We need to find a comprehensive policy to achieve the ends," he said.
The minister was speaking at an agriculture awareness function held at Kamong Meisnam Leikai community hall in Imphal west district, organized by the All Manipur Nupi Marup, Konthoujam area.
For enhancing food productivity, the role of farmers is great and as such farmers need to adopt the latest technical know-how which they can seek from the agricultural scientists and experts of the concerned department.
Officials of the agriculture department and other concerned establishments should also impart training to farmers, Parijat said.
He said, many farmer oriented schemes for enhancing food productivity are being implemented in the state under the funding of the Central as well as state government.
Farmers should avail the benefits of the schemes and officials of the department should also make aware the farmers about the benefits that farmers could avail from the schemes.
Officials of the agriculture department should introduce and demonstrate newly invented high-tech tools and machines to the farmers, he said.
M Sakhi, vice president of the All Manipur Nupi Marup was guest of honour in the opening function of the awareness programme which was presided over by N Kunjamala, Pradhan of Kamong Gram Panchayat.
Department officials spoke on new methods of cultivations, application of fertilizers and pesticides in the function.
