World Honey Bee Day observed

Under the aegis of National Bee Board, New Delhi, Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre under Directorate of ExtensionEducationofCentral Agricultural University observed World Honey Bee Day at the conference hall of the university at Iroisemba today.
The observance was graced by retired IAS officer Dr RK Nimai as chief guest; Vice-Chancellor, CAU, Prof M Premjit as president; Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU, Prof JM Laishram and Registrar Dr K Mamocha as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nimai said that beekeeping not only boost vegetable garden's production but also generate income for beekeepers by producing honey and beeswax.
He said that beekeeping requires less time, money and infrastructure investments and it has positive ecological consequences.
He exuded confidence that farmers can opt for beekeeping as one of the occupations to materialize the vision of doubling farmers income by 2022 which was conceptualized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Asserting that the work of beekeeping is growing rapidly in the North East States including Manipur, he urged the farmers to produce organic honey and abstain from using pesticide and insecticide for producing honey in large quantity.
Prof Premjit said that there is a huge demand for quality honey produced in the State in other parts of the country.
He divulged that CAU is considering providing logistic and technical support to formers' groups for yielding better productivity.
During the function, Dr Kh Ibohal, Principal Investigator, Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre shared the stories of those farmers who successfully took up beekeeping under the project.
