Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari has asked officials of his ministry to analyse the socio-economic significance of Bishnupur to Rengpang Road via Khoupum for possibility of upgrading it to a national highway.
In response to a request submitted by chief minister N Biren for converting the 92.5 km long road into a national highway, the union minister gave the information to the chief minister in a formal letter dated May 23.In the letter, Nitin Gadkari stated that he understands the importance of the highway infrastructure project in the state.
"While a policy for declaring new NHs is under consideration of the government, I have directed officials of the Ministry to analyse the socio-economic significance of the proposed road", the union minister stated in his letter.
He, however, informed that the factors considered will be traffic density, optimising efficiency of freight and passenger movement and enhancement of socio-economic development of the region.
Moreover, roads connecting existing highways, roads of importance for tourism development and roads important for development of an area/region among others will also be considered.
"Based on these factors, the proposals will be evaluated for prioritisation and inclusion in the NH construction programmes of the ministry", the union minister added.
