Imphal, November 11 2013:
A new mixed-breed fish called 'Nylon Togra' is expected to appear in the menu of the traditionally fish loving Manipuris sooner or later.
The mixed breed was produced after cross breeding Nylon Ngamu (Glossogobius giuris) and Mirgal(Cirrlinus mirgale) at a private fish farm - Fish production farm and breeding centre at Mayang Imphal, about 25 km south of Imphal.
"The mixed breed happened all of a sudden in an attempt at our farm during the summer of 2004 involving a male Nylon Ngamu and a female Mirgal", says Khaidem Swami Meitei(29), who owns the Mayang Imphal Awang Leikai fish farm.
"We're attempting to produce it for the general consumption.
But it will take sometime," he added.

Now Swami is planning to bring out its fingerlings by June-July next year.
So far, the new breed has also been distributed in Nungba areas in Tamenglong district and Tora in Ukhrul district on an experimental basis, Swami informed.
The said mixed-breed which almost looks like Mirgal carps, were on display during the first day of the 3-day farmers' fair at Indian Council of Agricultural Research(ICAR) Manipur centre at Lamphelpat in Imphal on Monday.
The new mixed breed is said to be healthier and tastier than Mirgal carps and a full grown fish of the said mixed breed weighs more than 1 kilogram to 1 and half kilograms within 2 to 2 and half years' time.
However, a researcher in the state said when contacted that the idea of making such attempt is to attract the fish eating population of the state.
But such kind of mixed breed fishes will not last its generations.
The formal inaugural function of the ongoing farmers' fair, which is being participated by many farmers and representatives of KVK centres in Manipur, was attended by Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir as chief guest besides ICAR NE region Director Ngachan led officials.
