Thoubal, May 10 2020:
The Thoubal River which is a source of livelihood for thousands of households is in an unconsumable state, a press release issued by Social Educational and Cultural Development Organisation (SECDO) has stated.
Digging up of the riverbeds using heavy machineries has caused the river water to turn murky, making it unconsumable.
Many of the households that depend on the river for water are left in a peril as they cannot afford to buy drinking water/water tankers, it said.
The High Court of Manipur had already passed an order in February, 2019 prohibiting the excavation of sand from the Thoubal riverbeds.
However, some people, for monetary gain are still conducting such excavations.
In this regard, SECDO has appealed to the Government to take up necessary actions against such individuals/groups.
The organisation also stated that its volunteers will boycott all sands and stones excavated from the riverbed if their demands are not met, it said.
