Black Quarter (BQ) epidemic hits state, cattle begin to perish

Outbreak of Black Quarter (BQ), a common disease among the cattle, has been reported in different parts of the state with large number of cattle already dying from the dreaded diseases.
The Veterinary Department has, however, taken up certain measures to control the epidemic and process is underway to vaccinate all cattle in the infected areas and beyond.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Dr K Gopal of Animal Disease section, Veterinary Department, informed that outbreak of Black Quarter (BQ) epidemic has been reported in some parts of the state and veterinary doctors of the Department have visited and inspected the affected areas.
He further informed that during the course of an investigation in Imphal West, an official team of led by Joint Director of Imphal West Veterinary Office, came across that around 19 cattle have died from Black Quarter disease.
This include 12 cattle in Ngairangbam, one in Khumbong, three in Moidangpok, two in Khomidok and one in Kamong.
Dr Gopal said that to save the cattle from being infected, the Veterinary Department would be taking up mass vaccination programmes in Imphal West district.
The BQ vaccines have been ordered from outside and they are expected to arrive at Imphal shortly.
The department has also taken up steps to vaccinate the cattle not only in Imphal area but throughout the state, he added.
Dr Gopal explained that BQ is a highly contagious disease even from sharing water and fodder from the same container.
If any case of BQ is found, the nearest Veterinary office should be informed immediately for necessary actions.
