Senapati-Ukhrul ADC by-poll declared sensitive

With the stage all set for the Autonomous District Council (ADC) by-poll in Phaibung Khullen of Senapati and Chingai of Ukhrul, the State government has declared the two constituencies as sensitive and all measures for smooth conduct of the polls will be initiated.
Official sources on Tuesday said the district authorities in Ukhrul and Senapati have declared "the two constituencies as sensitive areas" with the Naga organizations persisting on opposing the ADC polls.
The remaining two constituencies with a seat each in the two districts will go to polls on October 24 .
In the recent media reports, the Naga organization had reiterated its stand to continue with their boycott call of the ADC polls.
The district authorities, after the by-poll was being narrowed down to two seats, stated that "the elections will be very sensitive considering the volatile situation witnessed last year" .
Eight Congress candidates including seven in Senapati and one in Ukhrul have been elected unopposed.
In the upcoming polls, two Congress and independent candidates each are in fray for the Phaibung Khullen and Chingai respectively.
Seven seats in Senapati and one in Ukhrul have been declared elected unopposed as on October 3, which was the last day of withdrawal of candidature for the by-poll in 10 constituencies.
Ten ADC seats including eight in Senapati and two in Ukhrul were countermanded after the Naga organizations boycotted the election and not a single vote was cast in the elections held last year.
In the by-poll, 4475 voters will decide the fate in 17-Phaibung Khullen constituency of Senapati and 3969 voters for13-Chingai constituency of Ukhrul district.
The counting will take place on October 31 .
