Konsakhul Clash: Liangmais take out protest rally

Imphal, March 30 2023: Protesting against the assault and frequent intimidation of Konsakhul villagers by the neighbouring Leilon Vaiphei villagers and the recent assault of two villagers of Konsakhul and torching of vehicles, a mass rally was organised by Liangmai Naga Students' Union, Eastern Zone, on Thursday.

The protest rally kicked off from IGNTU campus in Makhan village under Kangpokpi district and proceeded towards NH-02 amidst tight vigil by Imphal West police personnel.

The rallyists, including large number of women, held placard which read "Go Back Illegal-immigrants", "We want Justice", "Illegal immigrants can't be land owners", "We condemn Konsakhul incident", "Provide befitting punishment to police personnel who assaulted innocent civilians" etc.

As soon as the rally participants reached the NH-2, Imphal West police personnel tried to stop the protestors from proceeding further and a scuffle broke out between the police and the protestors.

The scuffle broke out when the police tried to stop the rally from its further proceeding down the NH-2 .

Eventually, the cops managed to control the protesters, and the rally culminated at Kanglatongbi.

There is no report of any injury on both sides.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the rally, Liangmai Naga Students Union, Eastern Zone chairman Timothy Chawang informed that the rally was organised with villagers including women and youth in condemnation of the frequent assaults and intimidation of Konsakhul villagers by Leilon Vaiphei residents.

The protest rally demanded arrest of Leilon Vaiphei villagers who were involved in the March 26 detention of two villagers of Konsakhul, setting ablaze their two-wheelers and destruction of a JCB vehicle, to book the police personnel of Leimakhong police station, who assaulted two innocent villagers of Konsakhul, and to take up measures against encroachment of land by Illegal immigrants, he said, while appealing to the government led by chief minister N Biren to book all the culprits and also take up long-term measures for restoring peace and harmony in the state.

The protest was held under the banner, 'Rally against the abduction of innocent civilians and attempt to murder by Leilon Vaiphei villagers'.

Most of the protesters including females held placards that read 'Go Back Illegal-immigrants'", 'We want Justice' , 'Illegal immigrants can't be land owners', etc.

Amidst tight security and strict vigil of the Imphal West district police, the mass rally kicked off around 10 am.

Notably, the state government has im posed prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 in the general area of these two warring villages - Konsakhul and Leilon, due to escalation of tension, and has deployed a large number of police per sonnel for maintaining peace and tranquillity in these villages.
