Need for preserving tribal culture stressed

Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing on Tuesday emphasized the need for preserving tribal culture of Manipur through the help of proper written records, saying it was likely to die out in the absence of records.
Hailing the diverse cultures of various tribes in the state as beautiful gifts, Tonsing stated that the tribes in the state have rich cultural heritage.
He was attending the second day of the three-day long 3rd state level Tribal Cultural Festival at Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Chingmeirong here today.
Tonsing said the assorted cultures of the different tribes could disappear if they are not properly preserved on written records.
"We cannot protect our culture in the absence of record," the Minister asserted.
Commenting on the theme of the gala "Culture for Peace and Harmony" organised by Tribal Research Institute, Manipur under the joint sponsorship of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Government of Manipur, Tonsing maintained only unity can bring about peace and harmony, and development at the same time.
Lunminthang Haokip, Director, Tribal Affairs & Hills, Francis Ngajokpa, Minister for RD & PR/Economics and Statistics, and Armstrong Pamei, Joint Secretary, TA & Hills, were also present and spoke at the event.
