Imphal, April 26 2013 :
In order to prevent others from staking claim that the indigenous horse breed "Pony" as theirs, process for acquiring Intellectual Property Right (IPR) over 'our very own' Pony is in full swing, Dr Ksh Chaurajit, HOD of Pediatrics, JNIMS, who is one of the brains behind the pioneering move, has informed.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the World Intellectual Property Day function held at Imphal College here under the joint aegis of Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) and Department of Botany, Imphal College, Dr Chaurajit stated that "Pony has not only been associated with the history of Manipur but it is also a fact that the game of Sagol Kangjei or Polo, as it is known in other parts of the globe today, cannot be replaced by any other horse breed other than Pony.
He went on to state that Pony was not only used in playing Sagol Kangjei but also in ploughing agricultural land, in sending messages from one place to another and even during war times.
Along with disappearance of Pony from the State, the history of Manipur will also vanish.
As such, until and unless IPR over 'our very own' Pony is gained, we should stop sending out Pony to other parts of the world and at the same time stop bringing in other horse breeds.
While explaining the motive behind running after IPR for Pony, Dr Chaurajit pointed out that the problem we have faced in connection with "Moirang Phee" and "U-Morok" should not happen with Pony or with anything that is connected with Manipur.
"If we do not possess the right to claim what is ours and are later on claimed by others as theirs, our future generation will blame us", he added.
Presided over by Dr L Dinachandra, Senior Scientific Officer of MASTEC, the function was also attended by Rameshchandra Hamom, Principal of Imphal College and Th Baite, Director in-charge of MSME, Imphal as Guests of Honour.
