Imphal, August 21 2022:
A person who is not moved by the tune of Pena has long drifted away from our culture and tradition.
The present generation especially the young people's strong preference and imitation of foreign culture and custom is not a good sign for the future, said Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo.
Speaking as chief guest of the valedictory function of a cultural tour organised by Kanglei Seisaklon Sindamshang (KSS) for preservation and promotion of 'Khongjom Parva' narrative art form, held at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy here on Sunday, the minister observed that those who are not drawn to the soothing music of Pena are culturally alien to Manipuri art and culture.
Presided over by KSS president Khumanthem Sundari, the closing function was also attended by Transport minister Khashim Vashum and Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur Sanajaoba Leishemba's advisor Maisnam Shivdutta Luwang as guests of honour.
Dingo observed that youngsters flock towards any rock concert but their attendance is quite low when it comes to any cultural or traditional show of the state.
This is a huge challenge in the preservation of our culture, he said while stressing the need to make the youngsters aware about the importance and value of our rich culture and tradition.
The minister maintained that many traditional art forms of the state have been lost with the passage of time, while some are on the brink of disappearance.
As such, he appealed to all concerned, especially the young people of the state to take a proactive role in the preservation and promotion of Manipur's culture and tradition at the international level.
In his address, minister Khashim Vashum said that a person who upholds his/her culture will never do anything bad to the society or cause discord.
Our culture and custom are part of our identity.
No matter how much one imitates western culture, our original culture will forever remain a part of us and as such, it is important for us to protect and uphold our respective culture and tradition, he asserted.
According to Maisnam Shivdutta Luwang, 'Khongjom Parva' is a narrative art form based on the Khongjom War of 1891 .
It is not only a traditional art form but also highlights the patriotic spirit of the people.
Shivdutta then Stressed the need for preserving this art form in addition to discussing the changes brought on by time, while also offering tribute to Dhobi Leinao who introduced this art form.
As part of the valedictory function, various artistes presented Khongjom Parva' and 'Moirang Kangleirol' performances.
