RI for rape convict

Maibam Manojkumar, Session Judge Imphal West sentenced rape convict Philem Rajesh alias Prem to rigorous imprisonment for 8 years and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 under section 376 (rape) and another one year of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5000 under section 417 IPC (cheating).
The sentence was announced today after the Court convicted Philem Rajesh alias Prem alias Robot Meitei s/o (L) Ph Angou of Moirang Thana Leirak (presently staying at Uripok Sorbon Thingel).
During the hearing today, the APP submitted that the convict committed a serious offence and as such prayed for sentencing him to life imprisonment.
On the other hand, the defense counsel of the convict prayed for the Court to pass an appropriate order after considering the fact and circumstance of the case as the convict has nothing left to submit.
After going through the materials on record, the Court sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 8 years and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 under section 376 IPC (Rape).
The Court also sentenced the convict to simple imprisonment for one year and imposed a fine of Rs 5000 under section 417 IPC (cheating) The sentence order has to run concurrently, the Court ordered adding that the period which the convict has already undergone in judicial custody during the period of investigation as well as during the trial, if any, will be set off from sentence awarded.
