Imphal, May 15 2015 :
Even as many civil society organisa-tions have been fervently appealing to people of all communities to maintain calm, police teams went door to door in some areas of Checkon and North AOC with PA systems this morning.
They appealed to all the residents to stay calm and indoor as far as possible so that disruptive elements do not take advantage of the 24 hours general strike.
The 24 hours general strike was called since last midnight by the JAC constituted in the wake of the murder of two labourers and physical torture of a minor boy by KRF militants.
On account of the general strike, all the markets and commercial centres of Imphal remained shut.
All inter-State and inter-district transport services were suspended and attendance in Government offices was quite low.
All educational institutions were also closed.
Imphal-Dimapur highway was block- ed by bandh supporters at Chingmeirong, Mantripukhri, Khabam Lamkhai and Koirengei.
Local people of Kwakei-thel Akham Leikai inclu- ding local Meira Paibis and youth club volunteers blocked Kha-gempalli road.
Nongmeibung road was also blocked by bandh supporters as similar road blocks were put across the main road of Andro Parking.
However, the general strike was relaxed for essential services.
Meanwhile, several women organisations such as AMKIL, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi and ICHAL, while condemning the recent spate of violence which claimed lives of three innocent people, have appealed to all the people to refrain from provoking one another and also to desist from inciting communal conflagration.
Speaking to media persons today at AMKIL office, AMKIL president Ph Sakhi, Tammi Chingmi president S Momon Leima, Nupi Samaj general secretary Kh Ramani and ICHAL president T Ibemcha said that they would not tolerate further any kind of such unwarranted and unprovoked killings henceforth.
The State Government's tactics of solving such issues by giving compensation has been indirectly promoting such anti-social activities.
Rather than compensating the victims, the culprits should be awarded exemplary punishment in full public view, Ph Sakhi demanded.
She also appealed to all the people not to resort to any form of violence during protest agitation.
The Government should award befitting punishment to all those KRF cadres involved in killing the two labourers and physical torture of the young student, urged T Ibemcha.
She then appealed to all the people to be always on guard against the conspiracies hatched by those elements who have a sinister intention to disintegrate Manipur.
