Bishnupur, July 12 2017:
The incessant rains during the last few days has led to the water level of Ithai dam surpassing the danger level this morning.
According to officials of NHPC in-charge of monitoring the Ithai barrage, the increasing water level of the Khuga river has resulted in the water level of Ithai barrage surpassing the danger level by one foot, even though all five barrage outlets (doors) have been opened.
The increase of the Ithai barrage water level has also resulted in an increase of the water level of the Loktak lake leading to gradual flooding of the houses built around the lake.
On the other hand, the people and students of Ithai Laikhong blocked the Ithai barrage road demanding the authority concerned to take up necessary actions to reinforce the retaining wall of the river and to repair the road connecting Ithai Laikhong and Wangoo.
As a result of the bandh, no passenger vehicles plying from Kumbi to Khoradak, Nongmaikhong, Kakching Khunou etc were seen.
According to a protester the people have been urging the Manager of NHPC in charge of Ithai barrage, the local MLA but to no avail.
Accusing the officials and the authority concerned of turning a blind eye to the plight of the people, she further threatened to boycott any work related to the construction of the dam until and unless the authority concerned do not take up steps to repair the road and die retaining walls.
