Swine Flu victim's children face 'stigma'

Imphal, March 12 2015:
A sit-in was held at Brahmapur Bachaspati Leikai in Imphal East on Thursday protesting against the alleged attempt of some people to prohibit free movement of children of Late B Geeta who died due to Swine Flu on Wednesday.
The protest was jointly organized by Locality Improvement Committee (LIC) and Society for Women Empowerment (SWD) .
On the sidelines of the demonstration, SWD president B Manishangbi alleged that a school-going son of late Geeta has been purportedly barred from boarding his school van and hence he faced stigma and discrimination.
She alleged that some people have also reportedly expressed their fear in passing Brahmapur Bachaspati Lekai, the locality of late Geeta.
Manishangbi called upon the State Government to organize awareness programme on Swine Flu in order to prevent spreading wrong information about the disease and to distribute anti-Swine Flu drugs in every localities.
She said that the local MLA and Commissioner failed to visit Geeta while she was undergoing treatment at hospital for weeks.
The SWD leader urged the State Government to give financial support to the family of Geeta before 'sorat,' a religious ceremony for the dead.
Teachers' body wants school holiday All Manipur Recognised Private Schools' Welfare Association, Imphal (AMRPSWA) has sought permission of the State Government in declaring holiday by schools for some days as a precautionary measure against the outbreak of Swine Flu in Manipur.
The association in a statement requested the State Government to allow schools, particularly in densely populated Imphal area, to declare holiday for some days as part of the precautionary measures taken up by the Government to contain the disease.
The association also urged the State Government to organize a mass awareness program on Swine Flu at all educational institutions in Manipur.
The association suggested that vacation period of the current academic session should be shortened if schools have holidays in connection with the outbreak of Swine Flu.
