JNIMS in the process of becoming a full fledged Medical Institue: O Ibobi

The 16th Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State Chapter (ASIMANICON 2011) was held at the conference hall of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) today.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi said that JNIMS which was started by the Society for JNIMS with the objective of producing more undergraduates and postgraduates doctors for the state of Manipur as well as of the neighbouring states is in the process of becoming a full fledged Medical Institute.
He further said that JNIMS has been upgraded from the earlier JN Hospital, which has been gradually expanded to accommodate 700 beds from the existing 326 beds.
The construction of the permanent building of the Institute is also being started in the same campus.
The construction will be in the form of four identical structures which are interconnected with a number of lecture theatres, examination halls, recreation halls etc.
all these requires huge amount of funding and the government is tapping various sources for the purpose.
He further went on to say that JNIMS now admits 100 students annually according to MCI regulations.
The first batch of MBBS students will be appearing for the final MBBS examination in January, 2015 .
The second batch has already started with 100 students, out of which 15 are from the all India quota.
The authority is also planning to start post graduate courses including super specialty degrees.
At present the Institution has 26 professors, 7 associate professors, 44 assistant professors and adequate number of junior doctors.
The Institue is also in the process of filling up a number of posts in many departments as per MCI norms, he said.
He also rejoiced at the capability of the Department of JNIMS in providing quality treatment at affordable price.
The latest techniques and laparoscopic procedures are being used in the department with ease.
He further appealed to the surgeons to be a little more cautious in their duty towards the society at large.
The function was also attended by Health and Family welfare Minister L Jayentakumar, MLA N Bijoy, President Elect, ASI, Professor Ramakant, OSD, JNIMS, Professor M Shyamo were the Guests of Honour while President, ASI, Manipur State Chapter, Professor H Manihar presided over the function.
The Chief Minister who is the Chief Guest of the function also released a souvenir at the occasion.
