DESAM honours 62 meritorious students

In all 62 students of Imphal West district who excelled in the 2011 HSLC and HSSLC examinations have been honoured by the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) with presentation of simple gifts and mementoes at a felicitation function held today at Mayang Imphal.
The honoured students included 43 who achieved 80 percent or more aggregate marks in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination 19 others who attained similar achievement in the HSLC (matriculate) examination.
Speaking at the felicitation programme hosted by DESAM, Imphal West district Council, president of the student organisation LC Santosh claimed that private educational institutions have been flourishing in the State due to incompetency of Government schools.
expressing concern that Manipuri society is besieged with numerous problems ranging from rampant corruption to spiralling price of essential goods, he also cautioned parents/guardians to take utmost care in the education of their wards with the observation that there are many private schools whose authorities' only interest is minting money rather than producing quality citizens of the future.
Ruing that various Central sponsored schemes aimed at benefiting the student community are not being effectively implemented in the State thereby depriving the students gain of such noble programmes, Santosh also described as unfortunate the concept and practice that private tuition is a necessity.
with regard to the felicitation programme, he conceded that it is a humble gesture of DESAM to encourage students pursue for an even more excellence in the future.
Social activist K Manglem, Mayang Imphal unit Senior Citizens forum's secretary Chirom Naolo and Mayang Imphal Ward No.1 councillor Laishram Memcha were also present at the occasion.
