33 lakhs fish seedlings let off in Loktak

The Fishery department has let off 33 lakh fish seedlings in the Loktak Lake this year in an attempt to make fish available in abundance in the state.
An official source revealed that the 33 lakh fish seedings were let off at different areas of Loktak Lake.
The District Fishery officer, Imphal west let off 10 lakhs fish seedlings at Ningthoukhong, Fish farmer Development Agency, Imphal west let off 5 lakhs fish seedlings at Ithing, DFO Thoubal let off 3 lakhs at Komlakhong, Imphal East let off 10 lakhs at Haoreng, Bishnupur let off 3 lakhs at Ningthoukhong and 2 Lakhs at Takmu.
The department this year has increased its target to 35 lakh fish seedlings from 30 lakhs.
The varieties of fish seedlings which were let off in the Loktak Lake this year include Rou, Catla, Mrigal and Grass carp.
Among the indigenous fishes Pengba was also let off.
Hostels for fish farmers at the Imphal west fishery office is also under construction under the Rashtriya Kishan Vikash Yojna.
Apart from this fish breeding centre is also being constructed at Imphal west, Imphal east, Bishnupur, and Senapati, said the source.
The source further reveals that training halls in Imphal east, Bishnupur, Ukhrul, Churchandpur and Chandel has been constructed and also trainings been given to 50 fishermen each in the five hill districts and 100 fishermen each to 4 valley districts of the state.
Fish feeds have also been distributed at subsidized rates to the fish farmers.
