Role of media in Co-operative development discussed

Chairperson of National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI), Manipur, Jeena Potsangbam has stated that media is a temple of learning, where all classes of the society including deaf and dumb, literate and illiterate etc can learn on diverse subjects.
Jeena ,who attended the inaugural function of a day-long workshop on 'role of media in the cooperative development in Manipur' organised by Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Imphal under the sponsorship of NCUI, New Delhi at ICM's Lamphelpat Conference Hall here today as one of the Guests of Honour, said that people have wrong notions about Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Cooperative Societies as means of getting free loans from banks and to make quick money by bringing together a group of people.
Moreover, with increased number of 'fake social workers', the status of SHGs and Cooperative societies in the state are in a pathetic condition today.
In such a situation, media should play an active role to rectify the prevailing wrong concept among the people.
Former Member of Steering Committee, NER Vision 2020, DONER, Government of India, Prof.N Mohendro Singh, who was another Guest of Honour of the function, emphasized on the need of media's role in the developmental process of cooperative societies and said that media is the life blood of society, and together we need to address the basic issues of knowledge and information gaps in the Manipur.
During the technical session of the workshop, Special Correspondent of Seven Sisters' Post Yumnam Rupachandra, who spoke on the 'role of media in promoting cooperative movement' observed that media is responsible for the present condition of cooperative societies and other defunct departments in the state, and media persons should highlight such social maladies for overall benefit of the society.
Highlighting some of the common limitations of media houses in Manipur, he suggested the authorities of ICM to create a media friendly atmosphere and to ensure readily available of materials for publication.
Staff Reporter of Poknapham daily Sonia Sorensangbam, who spoke on the 'role of media in the cooperative development' suggested the officials of ICM to arrange training and courses for journalists on various aspects of cooperative society, build a good rapport with media persons through frequent interactions, organizing press conference by establishing separate media cell for each cooperative societies, etc.
Other resource persons namely President of All Manipur Working Journalist Union A Mobi and AIR Imphal's Prog.
Executive Engudam Achou Singh also expressed their views and suggested on the role that media can play in the development of cooperative societies in Manipur.
