Imphal, October 04 2022:
While alleging that the present BJP government in the state does not honour law and Indian Constitution, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) legal department chairperson S Sanou has demanded the reason behind not taking up action on the application submitted by the party to DGP Manipur on May 23, 2022 seeking registration of an FIR against chief minister N Biren on corruption charge.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan, here, on Tuesday, Sanou said that the legal department submitted a report to DGP Manipur on May 23 this year, requesting initiation of legal action against the CM.
The application relates to a remark made by Biren at a public function post the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election which went viral on social media.
According to S Sanou, the Election Commission of India (ECI) set a guideline for candidate's expenses in elections and Rs 27 lakh was the maximum limit set for the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election held on February 28 and March 5, 2022.However, chief minister Biren enquired MLA L Susindro how many crores of rupees he expended in the election during a public function.
CM Biren's remark was a clear example of spending crores of rupees in the election in violation ECI guideline and it was corrupt act and against law, Sanou said, adding that MPCC submitted the application as the CM's act was against law and urged the DGP to file an FIR on corruption charge.
However, no action has been initiated so far regarding the application and this indicates that state home department does not honour law, he said and condemned viola tion of law by the present BJP government.
MPCC legal department vice chairperson Md Rabi Khan, who also attended the press conference, said that how much the law makers in democratic country/state honour or violate law should be made known to people.
CM Biren repeatedly spoke about punishment if people take law into their hands or violate law.
Apart from putting up many people in police lock-up on the charge of speaking against its policies, the BJP government even jailed media persons and leaders in violation of freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution, he said, adding that people are well aware on whether BJP government respects freedom of speech or not.
The BJP government did not spare even panellists on TV discussion who spoke against the government, he said and asked if the home department cannot take action against the law violator CM .
