Imphal, April 28 2013:
During the past five years, Manipur recorded 40 cases of swine fever outbreak including 17 cases in 2010-11 .
This fact was established after an independent investigation by TSE after blood samples collected from some ailing pigs reared in Heingang area of Imphal East district were confirmed to have been infected by swine fever.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department has already clarified that swine fever does not easily transmit to human beings.
Consumption of pork meat infected by swine fever is tasteless and it does not give any valuable nutrients to human body, Department officials had said.
The Department sends reports about outbreak of swine fever in Manipur regularly.
Outbreak of swine fever during the past five years was highest in Imphal West district with Thoubal and Ukhrul following closely.
Chandel recorded the lowest rate of swine fever outbreak.
Against five cases of swine fever outbreak detected in 2006-07, 32 pigs died.
The corresponding figures for 2007-08 were six cases, 38 dead, for 2008-09 seven cases, 55 dead, 2009-10 five cases 54 dead and in 2010-11 17 cases of swine fever outbreak were recorded which caused death of 120 pigs.
However., despite this consistent rate of swine fever outbreak, the department made little publicity about it thereby disseminating little information to public about precautionary measures.
17 cases of swine fever outbreak recorded in 2010-11 were concentrated in Langol, Sangaiprou, Lamphel, Kangchup, Naoremthong, Kakwa, Langthabal and Langjing areas in Imphal West district; Kiyam, Khangabok and Athokpam in Thoubal district; Lambui, Sangshak, Riha, Sokpao in Ukhrul district; and Komlathabi in Chandel district.
In the course of the investigation, it was also learnt that HR.
Khanna, Assistant Commissioner, Ministry of Animal Husbandry sought the State Government's order in October last year for purchasing swine fever vaccine.
Although the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department has clarified that there is no such thing as Korean strain or Indian strain, there is one strain called C-strain or Chinese strain.
