Imphal, March 19 2018:
North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) organized a candle light vigil under theme 'North-East People's live Matter' along with a candle light march at the Arts Faculty, Delhi University, New Delhi at 6 pm, today.
A press release issued by the convenor of NEFIS stated that the present conditions of North-East people in Delhi and other metropolitan cities in India is known to everyone.
It mentioned that the death of Pravish Chanam under suspicious circumstances in Noida last year is one of the most shocking and disheartening incidents of racism witnessed in recent times and almost seven months have passed without any visible progress in the investigation into his death.
It further stated that it is noteworthy that Noida Police stands accused in the case and consequently the people of North-East from the beginning have been demanding a CBI enquiry in the case for which a number of memoranda demanding the same have been submitted to the Chief Minister of Manipur, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the Union Minister of Home Affairs and the Prime Minister as well but to no avail.
It claimed that the wilful negligence is a clear indication of the State Governments' and the Central Government's apathy towards the North-East people.
Moreover, Pravish's incident is not the last crime against North-East people, it mentioned and added that it is high time that the people of North East stand against racism and pledge that whenever and wherever incidents of racism against the people from North-East occur, the people shall collectively come out on the street.
During the march, the participants raised slogans like "We Want Justice", "Racism Down Down", "UP Government Down Down".
Family members of late Pravish Chanam were also present during the march and the candle light vigil.
