Staffers of Kakching Range led by Honorary Wildlife warden W Ramachandra Singh rescued 21 oriental turtle doves (Streptopelia Orientalis) from Sora, here, today.
The rescued birds which weighed around 125 gram on average were later released to a safe habitat.
Speaking to media persons after releasing the birds, Range Forest Officer, N Munal Meitei said that doves were widely seen in Manipur in the past, however, anthropogenic activities such as unchecked killing and trapping have made this variety of bird rare, today.
Saying that animals and birds play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, several bird species such as dove are beneficial for agriculture as they help destroy insects feasting on crops.
The killing of wild birds and animals is a punishable offence under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he said and appealed all to respect laws of the land and refrain from hunting/trapping birds and animals.
