Imphal, August 11 2018:
Shija Hospitals has been at the forefront in bringing advanced treatment technologies and specialties in Manipur, Interventional Radiology being one of them.
Yet again, in a rare feat in the medical history of Manipur, Shija Hospitals has successfully performed another "Complex Leg Angioplasty & Vascular Mimetic Implantation" on a patient with severe grade peripheral arterial disease also known as Critical Limb Ischemia.
The 55 years old man with multiple ulcers on his right leg with severe intermittent claudication (leg pain when walking due to blockage in arteries), he underwent Doppler and CT Angiography and was diagnosed to be a case of long segment Complete Total Occlusion (CTO-100% blockage) of arteries of the right leg also known as severe peripheral arterial disease.
There was no blood flow in right leg arteries from Aortic bifurcation till right knee joint (total length of the blocked arteries was 50 cm).
He underwent a complex pin-hole interventional radiological treatment "Balloon Angioplasty with stenting & vascular mimetic implantation".
The 50 cm long blocked arteries were all completely opened with immediate 100 % restoration of blood flow of his right leg.
The perplexing state-of-art pinhole interventional radiological treatment was performed for the first time in the State by Dr Thangjam Gautam Singh, Consultant Interventional Radiologist and Endovascular Specialist.
It may be recalled that Dr Thangjam Gautam Singh had successfully performed the first "Leg Angioplasty" in the medical history of Manipur in 2017.The patient had severe blockage in the arteries of the legs (below knee), leading to almost no blood supply in the legs.
Amputation was advised by elsewhere as he was not getting any improvement despite taking medications & conservative management.
He underwent "Below knee angioplasty" which successfully opened the blocked arteries of both legs.
The patient was saved from amputation and is now able to walk independently with no pain & completely healed ulcers.
Peripheral Arterial diseases may present with leg pain, swelling, ulcers and gangrene.
It can now be treated successfully with a variety of painless interventional radiology procedures.
"Leg Angioplasty" is a state-of-the-art minimally invasive painless treatment to open the blocked artery thereby restoring the blood flow in legs without open surgery.
It involves using very minute size (less than 2mm) sophisticated instruments (balloons/stents) inside the arteries through a pin sized hole entry in femoral artery under local anaesthesia.
