1 killed, another asphyxiated inside ring-well

A 40-year-old man from Assam was killed by unidentified gunmen on Monday night at Tuithapi village while another man who entered a ring-well was asphyxiated today at Zion Street here.
Armed men, about three in number, according to local media reports on Monday killed a 40 year-old man at Tuithapi village located at the Eastern fringe of the township at around 10 pm.
The assailants had even resorted to blank-fire before escaping, added the reports.
The dead body was picked-up on Tuesday morning by the locals and deposited at the district hospital morgue for identification.
The dead man was today identified as one Lalthangrem (40) s/o (L) Kambuang of Kwaklung, Cachar District, NC Hills in Assam.
The Police handed it over to the family through the Hmar Youth Association, GHQ.
In another tragic incident, a labourer identified as one S Jawanjit Singh (22) s/o Samungou of Khumujamba Meitei Leikai died today inside a ring-well moments after he repaired a generator used for pumping water, reportedly due to asphyxiation.
Sources said C Lalzomliana, a resident of Zion Street has since last week engaged some labourers to dig his ring-well deeper.
As the water level increases today when the labourers try to resume their digging, they installed a generator inside the well to pump out the water.
Jawanjit Singh was called to repair the generator when it stopped working in the middle.
Singh had finished repairing the generator and had almost made his way out when he lost consciousness and fell into the well, said a source.
The fire department was summoned to rescue Singh but when he was taken out of the ring-well and rushed to the hospital he was declared brought dead by the doctors, sources said.
Personnel of the Fire department rushed to the spot along with an oxygen cylinder but aborted their initial rescue bid as the oxygen stock was depleting.
They resumed the rescue operation with additional oxygen cylinders with one of the firemen identified as Omega Thangsuan entering the ring-well to perform the operation.
