World Wetland Day was observed at Kumbi College Library hall today.
Organised by the Kumbi College NSS Unit and Eco Club Kumbi, the observance was attended by Kumbi College Principal Kumam Jugeshwor Singh, Vice Principal Kh Gyanebushan Singh and Head of Department (Manipuri) Ch Modhumangol as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
At the event, Kumbi College Principal K Jugeshwor Singh raised concern that wetlands are fast disappearing.
Dwelling on the declining wetlands in the State, he said that people should be educated well about the benefits of wetlands to conserve them.
They should be taught about the ill effects loss of wetlands have on the environment, he added.
Loktak lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in the northeast India, was declared a Ramsar site in 1990.However, the lake was included in the Montreaux Record 1993, he said emphasising that all efforts should be taken up to conserve the lake.
The Montreaux Record highlights specific wetland of international importance under the Ramsar convention, but which are facing immediate challenges.
It is a register of listed Ramsar sites where changes in ecological character have occurred, are occurring, or are likely to occur as a result of technological developments, pollution or other human interference.
He also stressed on the need to educate the people around the Loktak lake to avoid trapping and hunting birds and other animals including the Sangai.
Encouraging the migratory birds to visit the lake is vital in saving the lake, he added.
It may be noted that forest and wildlife authorities in association with local clubs have been conducting drives in and around the Loktak lake and had seized many bird traps.
Notably, Wildlife Wing-Forest Department and Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) Manipur Chapter had recently conducted waterbird census.
