NERPF apprises PM, Delhi CM on NE safety

Convenor of North East Regional Parties Front (NERPF) and Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has apprised Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal to take up urgent measures in the national capital so that the people from the north east region can have secured environment.
Today's Neiphiu Rio's missives were prompted by the killing of Nido Tainam, a college student from Arunachal Pradesh who was lynched in New Delhi on Thursday by a mob.
Terming such incident as 'racist attack', an urgent letter each has been dispatched from Kohima today to the Prime Minister and also the chief minister of Delhi urging that the Government of India should take up this matter as a serious national problem.
According to Neiphiu Rio, if this is not addressed it will be impossible to create a sense of belonging in the minds of the people from the north east, and it will be difficult to overcome the alienation that is felt by the people.
"Such reality has negatively impacted the unity and integrity of the country for decades, and continues to create hurdles in the nation building process.
The North East Regional Parties Front (NERPF) condemns the murder and demands immediate and exemplary justice from the Government of India," Rio demanded.
Rio also urged that both the Central Government and the Delhi Government take up the investigation of this case with utmost sincerity, and "we assure all co-operation to your government in implementing effective steps that are aimed at protecting and re-assuring the people of the north eastern region in the national capital region
of Delhi" .
While terming the incident as a blot for Indian democracy, Rio reminded the NERPF representations to the Prime Minister last year with seventeen points resolution, which urged upon the Government of India to address special issues that were of concern for the people of the entire north east region, including the frequent racist attack on the people of the north east.
Point number seven of the NERPF resolutions had called upon the Government of India to take effective steps towards to ensure sdecurity for the students of the north eastern region in New Delhi, and other parts of the country.
The NERPF resolution had demanded from the Government of India to take up stringent measures to protect the students, especially girl students and working ladies from the region who are being subjected to physical attacks, indecent behaviour and insults in various metropolis of the country.
"Unfortunately, it appears that the Government of India is yet to take any firm step for the protection of the people from the north east," the NERPF convenor lamented.
