An awareness program on personal hygiene, with special emphasis on menstrual hygiene management, was organised by Manipur State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with Breaking the Silence (a global campaign) for women inmates and their children at the premises of Manipur Central Jail, Imphal.
The program was part of the ten-day long campaign for enhancing legal services to women inmates and their accompanying children in prisons.
Speaking as a resource person, Founder and CEO of Breaking the Silence, Urmila Chanam sensitized the women participants on understanding menstruation, different sanitary products and their correct uses, best hygiene practices etc.
The three hour long training deliberated on correct and institutional level disposal of used sanitary material.
Women participants shared their personal challenges and enquired on problems regarding infection, use of sanitary pads and the menstruation stigma which pose certain restrictions on them.
As part of the program, women inmates wrote down the discrimination and the myths regarding menstruation on a balloon and set off the inflated balloOn in the air signifying letting go of the myths that subjugate women during menstruation.
