RTI activists threatened

Three RTI activists of Thongju Part II Macha Leima RTI Nupi Lup have been reportedly threatened for filing application to seek information related to Thongju Part-II Gram Panchayat.
Addressing a press conference in this regard at the office of Macha Leima at Palace Compound here today, Geeta Potshangbam, Assistant Coordinator of Thongju Part II Macha Leima RTI Apunba Nupi Lup, informed that President of Thongju Part II Macha Leima RTI Apunba Nupi Lup Sophia and two other members manely Lakshmi and Babina had jointly filed an RTI application to BDO, Imphal East in 2011 to gather some information related to the functioning of Thongju Part II Gram Panchayat.
Geeta went on to inform that not long after the RTI application was filed, three job cards were found issued in the name of Sophia.
The job cards were made without the knowledge of Sophia herself.
So, a complaint petition was filed in the court of CJM, Imphal East.
Accordingly, an arrest warrant was issued by the Court against Romio, former Pradhan of Thongju Part II and nine other ward members.
But soon after the arrest warrant issued by the court, the three RTI activists, namely, Sophia, Lakshmi and Babina were threatened with dire consequences by Romio, the nine accused ward members and their gangs if they do not withdraw the their complaint petition from the court, Geeta added.
