MI ready to tackle drought

Minor Irrigation Department Chief Engineer L Gourakishore has said that the Department is always at hand and prepared to combat issues at times of drought.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, the Chief Engineer said that the Department is quite small and its tasks are small as well.
Some of the Department's works include ensuring proper irrigation for around 25 hectares of farmlands under the RLI Scheme, pick up wire schemes, he explained and added that Department is working tirelessly for the benefit of the people.
He explained that Minor Irrigation Department came from Water Resources Department (which was earlier known as Irrigation and Flood Control Department) in 1990 and till date, around 165 out of a total of 200 schemes taken up by the Department are functional.
Gourakishore said that the Department has also sent a proposal to the State Government to provide necessary assistance to ensure that the non functional schemes of the Department are revived as well.
Stating that the Minor Irrigation Department also extends assistance during the time of floods, the Chief Engineer said that the Department use water pump sets to channel water away from flooded locations in Lamphel area during flood every year.
