Training programme encourages women to be self reliant

A one day training programme on "Entrepreneurship & skill development through food processing among the rural women farm workers & unemployed female youth", organised by Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University Imphal Farmer First initiative was held at the university today.
Director of Agriculture, Laltanpuii Vanchhong, Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU Iroisemba Professor Y Jokendra, Director, Directorate of Extension Education, CAU Imphal Professor Ratan Kumar Saha attended the event as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
During the technical session, Meira Foods Proprietor Hanjabam Subra Devi spoke on preserving, processing and marketing of locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Meanwhile, SMS (Home Science), KVK Chandel Dr Y Prabhabati elaborated on value addition of mushroom & chilli for sustainability & higher income.
Giving his keynote address, Principal Investigation, FFP, CAU Imphal Professor Ph Ranjit Sharma said that CAU has been conducting the training programme for more then two years adding that it is the last training programme for 2018-19 .
Maintaining that the training is conducted especially for farm women, Professor Ranjit stated that the training programme will enable the women to empower themselves by creating and maintaining a source of livelihood.
He added that the training also focuses on improving the their income through sustainable works.
The Farmer First initiative was first implemented at the PM office and is implemented at 51 different centres in India including CAU Imphal, Assam Agriculture University Jorhat and ICAR Research Complex, Barapani in the North east region.
Meanwhile, Director of Agriculture, Laltanpuii Vanchhong maintained that the programme aims to empower the women but they can be only empowerment when they become self reliant through self employment.
Altogether 55 people participated in the training programme.
