Ceased SLF buses to be used in Sangai Festival

In the midst of growing euphoria surrounded over the ensuing Sangai Festival to be commenced from November 21 at Hapta Kangjeibung, the government has decided to use those Semi Low-Floor (SLF) buses provided to the State by the Central Government under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) for transportation during the festival.
Notably, all the SLF buses are lying useless for the last many days following its failure in trial basis in the city.
The Transport Department and Traffic Control Police had jointly conducted trial of the buses in some selected roads in the city.
During the trial, each bus incurred a lost around Rs 2000 per day since then service of the transportation of the buses was ceased.
Now, the government has asked the Transport Department to replace batteries and worn parts of the buses which are presently parked at garage ahead of the festival.
Repairing cost of the buses will be borne by the department itself.
A total of ten SLF buses would be used during the festival including transportation of tourists, Ministry officials and foreign media persons.
To do the needful, BK Sharma, Joint Director of Transport has been entrusted with necessary responsibility.
Meanwhile, along with constituting sub-committees and entrusting it with responsibilities to be shouldered in connection with the ensuing Sangai Festival 2014, concerned government departments have been also entrusted with necessary works to ensure that is no lapse in organizing the festival.
Sources said Industries Department has been entrusted with the responsibility to look after stalls to be opened in the festival while PHED Department will perform the task of supplying water which will be needed during the festival.
To ensure full-proof security in and around the venue of the festival, Home Department has been asked to take up necessary security measures ahead of the festival.
The Electricity Department has been given responsibility to supply uninterrupted electricity in and around venue of the festival.
On the other hand, PWD has been taking up repairing works of roads that lead to the festival site.
Repairing works along Thumbuthong road and Palace Compound are going on in full swing.
Work regarding arrangement of cultural troupes of the State including from outside the State who will be taking part in the festival has been handed over to Art & Culture Department.
Amongst the newly formed sub-committees, one of it will look after reception of VIPs and arrangement of the inaugural event of the festival while another one will arrange concluding function of the festival.
As part of the festival, Manipur Mountaineering & Trekking Association will organize adventure events including paragliding in different districts of the State.
The association will also organize Barak Expedition in Tamenglong and Kangkhui Caf� Expedition in Ukhrul during the festival.
